Philippines to United Kingdom (Great Britain) with a dog / cat

Last checked: Oct 2026 Dog / Cat

The Philippines is not a 'listed' country for GB pet travel, so your dog or cat needs a rabies blood test and a 3-month wait after the blood sample, plus a Great Britain pet health certificate signed by an official vet. Plan for at least 4 months from the first vet visit.

Minimum lead time: About 4 months minimum (21+ days after vaccine, 30+ days to blood draw, then 3 months from the blood sample).

Requirements, in order

1. Check your route and airline

Pets must arrive in Great Britain on an approved route and travel company. If you fly, GOV.UK says pets travel as cargo unless you are on a chartered private plane or travelling with a recognised assistance dog (GOV.UK guide).

2. Microchip (before the rabies vaccine)

Your pet must be microchipped before, or at the same time as, the rabies vaccination, otherwise it must be vaccinated again. GB checks read chips meeting ISO 11784 / ISO 11785; with a non-ISO chip you may need to bring your own reader. If the chip can't be read on arrival, the pet can be refused entry or quarantined (GOV.UK: microchip).

3. Rabies vaccination

Your vet needs proof the pet is at least 12 weeks old. The vaccine must be inactivated or recombinant and approved in the country of use. You must wait at least 21 full days after the first vaccination (or last dose of the primary course) — day 1 is the day after vaccination. Keep boosters on time: a missed booster means restarting the vaccinations and repeating the blood test (GOV.UK: rabies vaccination).

4. Rabies blood test (titer) — required from the Philippines

Because the Philippines is not EU and not on GOV.UK's listed-countries table (checked Oct 2026), a blood test is required:

The result stays valid as long as rabies boosters are kept up to date (GOV.UK: blood tests).

5. Tapeworm treatment (dogs only)

A vet must treat your dog with praziquantel (or a proven equivalent) no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before arrival in GB, and record product, date and time on the certificate. With a long-haul flight and layovers, time this carefully (GOV.UK: tapeworm). Cats don't need it.

6. Great Britain pet health certificate

From a not-listed country you must use a Great Britain pet health certificate — a pet passport or AHC is not accepted. It must be signed, stamped and dated by an official veterinarian authorised by their government, and your pet must enter GB within 10 days of issue (GOV.UK: GB pet health certificate). In the Philippines, the official export side is handled by the Bureau of Animal Industry (see step 7).

7. Philippine export clearance (BAI)

Export of dogs and cats from the Philippines goes through the Bureau of Animal Industry – National Veterinary Quarantine Services Division. ⚠ Not fully verified: the BAI site's destination-specific requirements load in an interactive selector we could not read automatically. Search-indexed text from the BAI NVQSD page (URL now returns 404) states that the Veterinary Health Certificate is valid for only 3 days after issuance and you should apply for the shipping permit within that window. Confirm the current steps and fees directly with BAI before booking.

8. Declaration and the 5-day rule

You also fill in a declaration that you won't sell or transfer the pet. Stricter 'Balai' rules apply if you're rehoming/selling the pet, if it arrives more than 5 days before or after you, or if you bring more than 5 pets (GOV.UK). Someone else can travel with your pet only if you authorise it in writing.

9. Quarantine and arrival

There is no routine quarantine if every rule is met. If not, your pet may be quarantined for up to 4 months (or refused entry if arriving by sea), at your expense. From outside the EU you collect the pet only after it clears customs — usually via an agent, travel company or airline; otherwise contact the National Clearance Hub (nch@hmrc.gov.uk) (GOV.UK: arriving).

Costs (official figures only)

GOV.UK does not publish a fixed fee for this route; vet, lab, official-vet and cargo costs are set by those providers. If rules aren't followed, quarantine and any charges are your responsibility (GOV.UK). We haven't listed BAI fees because we couldn't verify them.

Airline notes

Per GOV.UK, pets flying into GB must go as cargo (not cabin or checked baggage), except private charters and recognised assistance dogs, and only with companies on the approved routes list — which can change or be seasonal. Ask your airline whether it accepts your pet, how many, and whether it needs a fit-to-fly letter. Check transit-country rules for any layover.

Common mistakes

FAQ

Does a dog or cat from the Philippines need quarantine in the UK?

Not if all GB pet travel rules are met. If they aren't, the pet may be quarantined for up to 4 months at the owner's expense.

Does my pet need a rabies blood test to enter the UK from the Philippines?

Yes. The Philippines isn't an EU or listed country, so a blood sample taken at least 30 days after vaccination must show at least 0.5 IU/ml, and you must wait 3 months from the sample date before travel.

Can my pet fly in the cabin to the UK?

Generally no. GOV.UK says pets travelling by plane go as cargo unless you're on a chartered private plane or travelling with a recognised assistance dog.

How long is the GB pet health certificate valid for entry?

Your pet must enter Great Britain within 10 days of the certificate being issued.
